Established in 2014, this website has primarily focused on the process of learning academic materials and skills, with an emphasis on metacognition related to learning within the higher education environment.  A second emphasis has been the process of teaching, i.e. metacognitive instruction.

It’s now 2026 and much has changed since we started the site; however, we believe that metacognition is still a valuable skill for both learners and instructors. Some example current pressures for which the practice of metacognition might help are:

  • Support student awareness of distractions (e.g. social media) and guide behaviors to productively focus attention
  • Help bring intentionality to the use of GenAI for the support of learning for both students and instructors

Of course, metacognition can still provide support for the ongoing, everyday aspects of teaching and learning where we might fall into unexamined habits. These include course design, lesson and activity planning, ways of communicating, ways of instructing, ways of learning, and ways of assessing.
